Leah Honea Jones

Learning an Integrated Approach to Counseling

Hello! I’m Leah

(The Honea is pronounced “Honey”)

Since childhood, I have had the formidable desire to step into the emotions of others. I run toward those who are hurting when some would run away. My husband and I were in full-time ministry for fifteen years and I served on a church staff for two years. More recently, three years working at Covenant College was a turning point where part of my job involved serving as a mentor to students. Those conversations inspired me to pursue a graduate degree in counseling. Now, I’m looking for opportunities that enable me to use my past experience and professional education to serve others.

Layers of Counseling

i

Biblical Truth

A Bachelor’s Degree in Biblical Counseling ingrained in me the necessity of applying Biblical truth to the difficulties in life. We are broken sinful people and sin is inevitable and ever present in all of our hearts. God is faithful to preserve His people and provide comfort in the midst of devastating brokenness.

Scientific Fact

Just as God created stars and human form that gave astronomers the calendar and physicians’ understanding of anatomy, so did he allow facts around our mind and behavior to have consistencies that provide sustainable patterns. The brain holds our memories even if our mind forgets or ignores them. It is essential to understand our emotional and mental responses so that we can properly regulate and react to them.

w

Life Experience

Events in life can stick with us and adjust our perspective on all other aspects of life. Some events are tragic and cause suffering that must be revisited. Often times, for true healing to take place, we need a third party to step into our suffering with us and provide a different perspective.

I didn’t know I had racial bias until someone told me there’s no way I could have escaped the effect of cultural atrocities ingrained in our country. This hidden bias is catastrophic to my heart and soul. It must be sought out and consistently battled

During this uncertain time, this bird is building her nest on the kindness of an all-controlling God who can’t help but be good to a daughter whom he adores.

Brass tacks: your kids and my kids will likely be introduced to inappropriate images, video and verbiage through their own curiosity or their peers encouragement. This will likely happen before they graduate from high school.

Last week, my son’s iPad kissed the concrete. While it still can be sort of used for Netflix, he lamented it was no longer usable for notes in math. His teacher talks too fast for him to type Algebra problems on his Chromebook using a mouse and it was easier to type...

5 Survival Tips: Pursuing Higher Ed in Your Forties

If not now, when? These are the words I keep asking myself. Relearning how to study, research, and write while working full time and housing a middle aged brain is not easy. Time is sparse and many items of importance vie for my attention. I haven’t learned all the...

Boundaries

Boundaries

Not only do we have to acknowledge where our parameters lie but we also need to respect the parameters of others. In addition to seeing where these invisible boundaries should exist, we then have to acknowledge how others may be encroaching in ways that are unhealthy.
